Victory Marks a Historic Milestone for Black, Muslim, Asian American and South Asian Representation in Harris County Government
Houston, Texas | November 3–4, 2026 | Reported by Tariq Nehal Khan
HOUSTON, TEXAS — Dr. Letitia Plummer, the Democratic nominee, has been elected Harris County Judge, defeating Republican Orlando Sanchez in the November 3, 2026 general election. Plummer declared victory as Sanchez delivered his concession speech, and she becomes the first Black woman to serve as county judge in Harris County, according to KPRC-TV. Results remain unofficial until the canvass is complete.
Plummer hosted supporters on election night at Cactus Cove, a bar in West Houston, according to the Texas Observer, which reported that the mood early in the evening was touch-and-go before the night turned in her favor. Harris County voters delivered Democratic wins up and down the ballot, and Plummer’s victory was among the most closely watched.

Gratitude to the Community
At her victory party, Plummer spoke with Tariq Nehal Khan of Pakistan Chronicle, South Asian Chronicle News and DesiTVUSA. She thanked the entire Muslim American community, the Asian American community and South Asian Americans for their support and endorsement throughout the campaign.
The Judge-elect also said she was very grateful to Emgage, the Asian American Political Action Committee (AAPAC) and the 80-20 PAC for their endorsements, which helped carry her message to voters across Harris County.
The support of these communities was visible throughout the campaign and again at the celebration. Community media serving Pakistani American and South Asian readers, together with faith-based and civic groups, helped bring candidate information to residents who often feel overlooked in county politics. Plummer’s thanks to those groups underscored how much local organizing mattered to the outcome.

Community Leaders at the Celebration
Among the guests who joined the celebration were Dr. Asim Shah, Afshi Charania and Maryam Khan. Supporters from many backgrounds stopped for photographs with the Judge-elect, and the mood through the evening was warm and celebratory.
Who Is Letitia Plummer?
⦁ Harris County Judge-elect and Democratic nominee in the 2026 general election.
⦁ Former Houston City Council member.
⦁ Won the Democratic nomination by narrowly defeating Annise Parker in the May 2026 runoff.
⦁ Will succeed County Judge Lina Hidalgo, who did not seek reelection.
The Race
Plummer faced Orlando Sanchez, a former Harris County treasurer and Houston city controller. The two campaigned on issues including property taxes, public safety, infrastructure and government spending. Sanchez conceded on election night.
Plummer’s path to the general election was not easy. In the March Democratic primary, Annise Parker finished first with about 47 percent of the vote to Plummer’s roughly 37 percent, sending the race to a runoff. In the May runoff, Plummer narrowly won, by about two percentage points according to unofficial returns, and became the nominee. In interviews during the campaign, she spoke about prioritizing county services and called for changes to the county’s Flock camera contract.
What This Victory Means
Despite the title, the county judge does not preside over a courtroom. The office leads the Harris County Commissioners Court, which oversees the county budget and decisions on roads, flood control, public health and other county services for the most populous county in Texas.
For Muslim American, Asian American and South Asian communities across the Houston area, many of whom were represented at the victory party, the result marks an important moment of representation in county government.
Plummer takes on the job as Harris County continues to wrestle with flood mitigation, public safety spending and the county’s financial priorities. Her leadership of Commissioners Court will be closely watched by residents across the county, including the communities that stood behind her campaign and gathered to celebrate with her.
